The newborn products I would buy again—and recommend to every new mom.
There are a million baby products marketed as “must-haves,” and after becoming a mom of two boys, I’ve learned that you absolutely do not need everything.
You need the things that make those early newborn days a little easier.
These are eight products that I’ve personally tried and loved with my boys. They’re the things I found myself reaching for again and again—whether it was during a middle-of-the-night diaper change, a fussy afternoon, a contact nap, or one of those newborn days when you’re wondering how it’s already time to feed the baby again.
If you’re building a registry, preparing for a new baby, or looking for a practical baby shower gift, these are the newborn essentials I would put at the top of my list.
A quick note: Some of the links below are Amazon links. If you purchase through my links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I genuinely like and would recommend to another mom.
1. Little Sleepies Zippy Pajamas
Shop the Little Sleepies Zippy on Amazon
If there is one thing newborns go through quickly, it’s pajamas. Between spit-up, diaper blowouts, and all those adorable outfit changes, you can never have too many comfortable sleepers.
The Little Sleepies Zippy is a soft, stretchy one-piece pajama made with the brand’s Lunaluxe bamboo-viscose fabric. The design includes a two-way zipper, fold-over mittens on smaller sizes, and convertible foot cuffs. The zipper is especially helpful when you’re changing a diaper at 2 a.m. and absolutely do not want to deal with a row of tiny snaps.
As a mom of two boys, I’m all about baby clothes that are comfortable, practical, and easy. These check all three boxes.
I also love that the foot cuffs can be worn folded over or open, so one sleeper can work as your baby grows.
My mom verdict: If you’re going to splurge on one type of baby clothing, make it pajamas you know you’ll reach for constantly.
2. Yogasleep Hushh Portable Sound Machine

A newborn doesn’t know that your house is supposed to be quiet.
The dog barks. Someone knocks on the door. Your older child drops a toy. The dishwasher starts. And suddenly the baby who finally fell asleep is wide awake.
That’s where a portable sound machine can be incredibly helpful.
The Yogasleep Hushh is a small, rechargeable sound machine designed specifically for babies on the go. It has three soothing sound options, an amber night light, adjustable volume, and a clip that can attach to a stroller, diaper bag, or car seat.
I especially love the portability. You can use it in the nursery, take it into another room, or bring it along when you’re traveling.
For a mom with more than one child, I think this is even more useful because life doesn’t stop just because the baby is sleeping.
My mom verdict: Put this on your registry. You’ll appreciate it every time your baby falls asleep somewhere other than the nursery.
3. Mabē Monarch Ergonomic Baby Carrier — My Absolute Must-Have
Shop the Mabē Monarch Baby Carrier on Amazon
If I could tell a new mom to buy one thing from this entire list, it would be the baby carrier.
The carrier is an absolute must.
There are going to be days when your newborn wants nothing more than to be held—and you still need to eat, make lunch, fold laundry, help your other child, walk around the house, or simply have both hands available.
The Mabē Monarch Baby Carrier gives you that closeness while allowing you to keep moving through your day. The carrier is designed for babies from approximately 9 to 45 pounds and offers multiple carrying positions as your baby grows. It has an adjustable fit and is designed to support baby in the hip-healthy “M” position when properly adjusted.
And this is one of those products that becomes even more valuable when you have an older child.
With my boys, I wanted to be able to hold my baby while still being present for my other child. A carrier gives you that freedom.
It’s also fantastic for walks, errands, traveling, getting things done around the house, and those days when your baby simply wants to be close.
My mom verdict: BUY THE CARRIER. Seriously. If you’re debating whether you’ll actually use one, I think you’ll be surprised by how often you reach for it.
4. Mylicon Infant Gas Relief Drops
Shop Mylicon Infant Gas Relief Drops on Amazon
Newborns and gas seem to go together.
Their digestive systems are still developing, they’re learning how to coordinate feeding and swallowing, and sometimes you end up with a very unhappy little baby who just needs help getting comfortable.
Mylicon Infant Gas Relief Drops contain simethicone, an ingredient designed to help break up gas bubbles so they can be expelled more easily. The manufacturer states that the product can be used in newborns when used as directed.
This is one of those things I like having on hand, even if you don’t end up needing it every day.
My mom verdict: You hope you won’t need it, but when your baby is uncomfortable, you’ll be glad it’s already in the cabinet.
5. BioGaia Protectis Baby Probiotic Drops
Shop BioGaia Protectis on Amazon
Another product I like having available for those newborn tummy troubles is BioGaia Protectis.
This is a probiotic containing the strain Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis. BioGaia specifically markets its infant probiotic for digestive comfort and has research around this particular strain and infant colic.
The important thing to know is that probiotics aren’t all interchangeable. Different strains can have different evidence behind them, so I wouldn’t assume that every baby probiotic works the same way.
I also wouldn’t automatically give a newborn supplements simply because they’re on a “newborn essentials” list. Talk with your baby’s pediatrician about whether a probiotic makes sense for your baby, especially if your baby was premature or has any medical concerns.
My mom verdict: Another one I like having in the newborn toolbox, especially during those early weeks when you’re learning your baby’s tummy and feeding patterns.
6. Baby Shusher
Shop the Baby Shusher on Amazon
Sometimes you don’t need another complicated gadget.
You just need someone—or something—to shush the baby for you.
The Baby Shusher uses a rhythmic human “shhh” sound rather than traditional white noise. The original model is portable, wireless, has adjustable volume, and offers 15- and 30-minute timer settings.
And honestly? There is something hilarious and wonderful about having a little machine do the shushing when you’ve already been doing it for what feels like an eternity.
It’s small enough to keep nearby, and the strap makes it easy to take along in a stroller or diaper bag.
My mom verdict: A simple little gadget that can be surprisingly helpful when you have a fussy newborn and you’ve run out of ideas.
7. Frida Baby 3-in-1 Humidifier
Shop the Frida Baby Humidifier on Amazon
A humidifier is one of those nursery items you may not think much about—until you need one.
The Frida Baby 3-in-1 Humidifier combines a cool-mist humidifier with a night light and diffuser. It has a top-fill design, a large opening for easier cleaning, automatic shutoff, a low-water indicator, and adjustable mist.
I love baby products that serve more than one purpose, especially when nursery space is limited.
The gentle night light is also convenient for those middle-of-the-night feedings when you need enough light to see what you’re doing but don’t want to turn on a bright overhead light.
My mom verdict: A practical nursery staple that earns its space because it does more than one job.
8. The Ollie Swaddle
Shop the Ollie Swaddle on Amazon
Swaddling can be a game changer during those early newborn weeks.
The Ollie Swaddle is designed to make swaddling easier with adjustable closures, a lightweight fabric, machine-washable construction, and an open-bottom design for easier diaper changes. The design can also accommodate arms in or out.
As a mom, I appreciate anything that eliminates the need to become an expert at folding a giant blanket into the perfect newborn burrito.
And let’s be honest—newborns have a talent for escaping swaddles at exactly the wrong moment.
One important safety reminder: Babies should always be placed on their backs for sleep, and swaddling should stop as soon as a baby shows signs of trying to roll. Weighted swaddles are not recommended.
My mom verdict: If your baby loves being swaddled, this can make those early sleepy days much easier.
My Real-Mom Newborn Essentials
After two boys, I’ve learned that the best baby products aren’t necessarily the fanciest ones.
They’re the ones that make everyday life easier.
The pajamas that make diaper changes faster.
The sound machine that helps create a familiar sleep environment.
The swaddle that doesn’t require you to wrestle with a receiving blanket.
The products you keep in the cabinet because you might need them during a 2 a.m. newborn meltdown.
And most importantly, the baby carrier that lets you hold your baby while still having your hands free.
If you’re a first-time mom building your registry, don’t feel like you need to buy every baby gadget you see. Start with the things that make feeding, sleeping, changing, soothing, and simply getting through the day easier.
